Melbourne Victory’s Sam Gallagher will miss Friday’s game against Perth Glory after the Match Review Panel (MRP) gave the minimum suspension time to the 21-year-old for his red card from the weekend.
Gallagher was sent off against Western Sydney Wanderers in the 16th minute after he was deemed to have denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity when bringing down Wannderers’ Dino Kressinger.
Replays later showed that Gallagher was clipped by Kressinger in the build up to the foul.
Football pundits such as FOX Sports’ Mark Bosnich and Adam Peacock, as well as SBS The World Game’s Ned Zelic, condemned the referee’s decision to send off the youngster, saying Kressinger’s clip on Gallagher should have been noticed.
In a statement released today, the Match Review Panel (MRP), made up of Simon Micallef (Chair), Alan Contini and Con Diomis, said:
1. The incident involving Sam Gallagher (Melbourne Victory) in or around the 16th minute of Melbourne Victory’s match against Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday night. The MRP has the authority to consider the incident as the player was issued with a direct red card. The MRP confirmed that Sam Gallagher will serve the Minimum Sanction of one (1) match, being the Mandatory Match Suspension.
